Theatre Royal Youth take on technically challenging Railway Children show

The members of Theatre Royal Youth are very excited about their next play, Edith Nesbit’s The Railway Children, adapted for the stage by Dave Simpson (presented by special arrangement with Samuel French Ltd).

This highly entertaining family show will feature film projections and complex staging and lighting, as well as a large cast aged 8 to 18. Director Joel Indiana says: ‘I hope everyone will enjoy our most technical show yet! All Aboard!’

Set in Edwardian times, the play tells the story of Peter (played by Luke Ritson), Phyllis (Sophia Alford) and Roberta, known as Bobbie (Issy Smith), whose lives change overnight when two strangers suddenly take their father away. Forced to leave their comfortable home in London and move to a small country cottage, the children are left

to their own devices while their mother (played by Abigail Sansom) struggles to earn a living from her writing.

But with their poverty comes more freedom than they have ever known before, and the railway line at the bottom of their garden offers the trio new friendships that will change their lives forever.

Workington’s Theatre Royal Your are preparing for their greatest technical challenge yet as they embark on Edith Nesbit’s classic The Railway Children.

Adapted for the stage by Dave Simpson and presented by special arrangement with Samuel French Ltd, this entertaining family show will feature film projections and complex staging and lighting.

The large cast, aged eight to 18, are excited at the prospect and director Joel Indiana said: “I hope everyone will enjoy our most technical show yet.  All aboard!”

Peter (played by Luke Ritson) and his two sisters, Phyllis (played by Sophia Alford) and Roberta (Bobbie) (played by Issy Smith), are growing up in a comfortable middle-class home in Edwardian London when their father is suddenly taken away by two strangers and their lives change overnight. With no regular income, their mother is forced to move to a small country cottage, and the children are left to their own devices while she concentrates on writing books to support the family. But with their poverty comes more freedom than they have ever known before, and the railway line at the bottom of their garden offers the trio new friendships that will change their lives forever.
